While on the plane the other day, I was reading John Maxwell’s “How Successful People Think”. He poses an interesting concept concerning the many thoughts that constantly enter our minds. He created a formula:
The Right thought plus the Right People
in the Right Environment at the Right Time
for the Right Reason = the Right Result
Think about it. Will this equation work on a personal level? Let’s say you are on your way home from work and you think about someone you haven’t talked to in a while. You have every intention of making that ‘call’ when you get home.
We all know what happens next. You get home; one thing leads to another and before you know it, that thought is long gone and long forgotten…
Let’s try the above formula: Why not pull over? You have all the elements right now: the thought, the right people (you and that “certain” someone); the right environment (no one else is around you); the right time (you are alone NOW – no interruptions); the right reason is definitely there (to continue and enhance a relationship), so your goal of hitting the right result can’t miss!
Will it work professionally as well: Let’s see: For several months I have wanted to find a way to reach more people – but how? I want to share my message but I know most cannot attend my speaking engagements. If I can set up a certain time each week, maybe I can accomplish my goal!
The right thought: weekly coaching calls where anyone can call in and listen. Make it available for everyone. If they are unable to tap in when we do the call live, I’ll record the session and they can then pull up the link when it is convenient for them to listen. My mind is going faster than my fingers can peck!
Now the right people - contact someone who has done this and get all the details. Done! Most importantly – conference call (right environment and right time) with the my staff where we can discuss the pros and cons, then delegate what role each one of them will play in getting this ‘thought’ accomplished. The right reason is there – I want my message to reach as many people as possible and make it easy to access the call. End result is that I have the Right Result. I have accomplished my goal of creating a weekly coaching call.
Remember, every thought has the potential to become something great.
